The key to making savings
The horticulture industry has much to gain in aiming to optimize energy and achieving efficient use of water. By doing so, growers not only help people and limit the impact that their business has on the environment, they are also in position to make significant cost savings.
 
The idea is to create an ‘energy cycle’, where excess energy and waste of one process is used productively in another, while the waste of that process becomes fuel for another, and so on. A current example is an initiative to create a system whereby the waste heat from a customer’s glasshouse is used to provide heating for surrounding houses. This results in substantial energy and cost savings for the neighborhood and a much reduced carbon footprint for the grower.
